Ultra-Scale Photonic Control and Measurement Group

Research overview

We are at the forefront of the development of ultralow-noise optical frequency comb sources and their innovative timing applications spanning from synchronizing ultrafast quantum science and radio astronomy facilities through chip-scale microwave photonic systems to ultrafast 3D dynamics imaging.

Not only have our recent research findings been published in high-impact journals such as Nature Photonics, Nature Communications, Science Advances, Light: Science & Applications, and Optica, but they have also been actively applied in high-tech industries such as Quantum Technology (on-chip frequency synthesizers for portable quantum time sensors and timing for quantum links), ICT & AI (on-chip photonic clock distribution and data converters), Defense (photonics-based radars), and Semiconductor Manufacturing (sensing and imaging for semiconductor device manufacturing processes). Thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of our research, we also enjoy a wide range of domestic and international collaboration opportunities with academia, national labs, and industries.

Current on-going research projects include:

  • Micro-comb-based ultralow-noise mm-wave generators (supported by NRF)
  • Investigation of high-frequency jitter of micro-combs (collaboration with Chalmers; supported by NRF-SSF)
  • Photonic signal generation and phase calibration for VLBI telescopes (collaboration with KASI, KRISS, KISTI; supported by NST-CAP and KASI)
  • Integrated optical frequency synthesizers for quantum time sensors (collaboration with KRISS; supported by IITP)
  • Rapid, precise and multifunctional LiDARs (supported by NRF-ERC)
  • Rapid and precise TGV glass substrate metrology (supported by LG Innotek)
  • Stress and defect detection in OLED glasses (supported by LG Display)
  • Femtosecond laser-based semiconductor wafer metrology (supported by Samsung Electronics)
